The other day, Yves Rossy took to the skies in Switzerland with a winged backpack loaded with four mini-jet engines.

He swooped and soared for a handful of minutes before cutting the engines and pulling the cord on his parachute and drifting to the ground.

It's pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. Read about it here.

When I saw the first pictures from it, though, all I could think was, "Hey! I've seen that before!" It took me a little while to remember where...

(From YoJoe.com.)

Then I realized not only had I seen it in that comic, but I had the toy, too.

And now I feel like just that much more of a geek. :)

Just putting the offer there.

One of my favorite news commentator of all time, Kieth Olberman, has once again masterfully taken the Bush regime to task in a way I could only hope to do.

Love him or hate him, Olberman has facts to back up most of his criticism (if not all). Read it. Watch it and discuss.

OK, I just received email from Charon. Anyone who would care to help out can paypal a donation to Charon at oddangel dot com. She's on the road working, and will not be able to be at the Palace of Wonders tonight, so she's sent a message to be read to the assembly.

Cyclone Nargis [May. 15th, 2008|01:18 pm]

Mandalay will be holding a benefit dinner the evening of June 1. $50 cash/check per person, all you can eat buffet.

I stopped in for lunch today after picking up my final project for editing. Aung looks... crushed. He canceled his cable service because he just can't bear to look at the images anymore. Their Dad gets back next week– but essentially it's indescribable. Bodies are starting to decompose.

If you can't make it in to the buffet on the 1st, you can always stop in- they've got a jug set up for donations. Basically, my feeling is this– the military and local gangs are pretty much ensuring that any formal NGO aid gets circumvented. I believe that the Myint family has the good will and the ability to ensure that real people get some help. Even if the task seems hopeless.

Even if you can't donate anything, go in and enjoy tasty food, and let them know you care.

---

The Mohingar soup has made me feel some better. During the exam my head and neck were aching terribly, and I wanted nothing so much as to throw up– except that you can't leave the room and come back. My stomach feels better but my head doesn't. I'm alternating a bag of ice between my head and neck.

I picked up my final project from 379c. I got a 92% on it. I get a 92 on all the major projects in that class. She says I'm operating at a high level, and had a good product; I shudder to think of what she's giving other people. I have to finish the final exam and turn it in by 1pm tomorrow, which is also when my cartography exam starts.

God, my head hurts.

Mid Life Crisis [May. 15th, 2008|12:01 pm]

kelowna
What do you do?

I was kick started into conversation yesterday after reading a post from [info]vicar about Habitat for Humanity. I recall, if I didn't mis-read, that [info]doc_quixote did something similiar a few years back.

If 1/4 of what the media says Angelina Jolie does is true then most everyone i've every met in my life combined does -- less.

I don't say that as a snarl. I say that with a sigh.

I read somewhere, yesterday, a sort of eulogy that said: My dad always wanted to be a better man just not enough to become one.

We all dream and we want and we look forward and remind ourselves that life isn't so bad. We also distract and drug and hide and fear and shrug and accept. We do what we can to temper the crescendo of waves in our mind so as to not drive ourselves crazy. Some do it intuitively without having to remind the self to do so. Some drug it away and the habit eases the need for action.

I don't know if not thinking will cause more doing. If thinking too much creates doubt in the land of potential development. Or if each series of thought and talk should follow with an equal or great movement or action.

Just musing.

Riffing off flavobean [May. 15th, 2008|11:37 am]

[mood | angry]

As the man said, this started as a comment in [info]flavobean 's journal, but I decided it deserved a separate post.

I was all confused by all the little NARAL's playing a game of hot potato with NARAL America's endorsement of Obama. In particular I was confused by NARAL NY, thinking hadn't we heard from them before?

But I was confused. It wasn't NARAL NY, it was NOW NY calling Ted Kennedy "Judas", long before James Carville picked up the torch and threw it at Bill Richardson.

And now I'm thinking, where's MY outrage? Where are MY feminists? Where are MY op-ed pieces saying that the entire point to feminism, that we have choices and opportunities, has been co-opted, distorted and made into something ugly by a cross-section of women and women's organizations who either outright say, or imply that in a choice between any female candidate and a male candidate, the female candidate apparently always trumps. Isn't this just the reverse of everything we've been fighting against: that the order of the day is equality and what's best for women, regardless? Of course the advancement of women is important, but at any cost? Does that mean if Phyllis Schlaffly  is better than a man? Hyperbole, perhaps.

Certainly it's sexism if people say they're not voting for Clinton only because she's a woman, so why isn't the reverse true? And why aren't women angry about this?

This isn't even a pro-Obama post or an anti-Clinton post; that's so beside the point.

What I want to know is: where has my feminsm gone and what have you done with it?

For the Benefit or our own Johnny Slaughter [May. 15th, 2008|09:21 am]

fenriss
I am always the last person to learn these things! I just heard that there will be an event to benefit our old pal Johnny tonight at the Palace of Wonders. As most of you know, he was in a very bad accident last year that damaged his leg, and lead to multiple surgeries. He and Charon have been faced with colossal medical bills as a result. If you can possibly make it out, please do so. I'm not sure if E and I can make it, so I am trying to figure out if there is a way to help online. I'll post if I find out.

What would Hank do? He'd be a stand up citizen, and help a guy out!

Artomatic? [May. 14th, 2008|11:31 pm]

[mood | creative]

Seems I know a whole lot of people exhibiting things at Artomatic.

As such, I'll be hitting Friday's Meet the Artists night to, well, catch up with some people I haven't seen in a while.

I'd love to have a bunch of other people out with me. It's a great chance for me to cross-pollinate my circles of friends and have a good time while doing it.

I get out of work about 5-ish. The official meet and greet starts at 7-ish. There should be eating at some point. Then a whole lot of walking around the most art-filled building in DC.

So, who's interested?
